Otaleg Gelato in Rome

UPDATE NOVEMBER 2018: This location (the original) has now closed. Luckily, there is a new and more convenient location: Otaleg gelato in Trastevere.

“I’m going to buy new pillows,” I shouted to Jimmy.

“Ok… how long will you be?” he asked.

“An hour and a half,” I replied. Because really, it was not just about the pillows. I was going to finally trek out to Otaleg.

Up past Trastevere, and beyond Monteverde, when you hang a right at the supermarket, but just before the discount makeup chain, is some of the most delicious gelato in Rome.

Otaleg is the gelato mecca created by Marco Radicioni.  Outside of Rome’s city center, the gelateria is in an unassuming neighborhood but attracts plenty of attention.

Pedestrians pause to peer into the window where Marco can often be seen creating flavors on a vintage machine to limit the amount of air incorporated into the gelato.

Otaleg has a maximum of 60 flavors at any given time.

I chose mascarpone with basil and lemon, cassata (ricotta with candied fruit) and mango chocolate chip (because I cannot resist mango).

They are basically all perfect flavor explosions.

I am not going to lie – Otaleg is way the hell out there. If you are visiting, you are going to have to be a bit dedicated to make it to the neighborhood. Think tram, then bus.

However, you will not be disappointed. Otaleg makes fantastic gelato, and my gelato map of the best gelato in Rome has been updated accordingly.
