A Virtual Easter Egg Hunt at IKONO Roma

Rome for Easter is iconic: the Vatican is down the road and there are traditional events starting the week before the big Sunday. But if you’re visiting Rome and looking for something a little off the standard Easter path — IKONO has created a fun augmented reality egg hunt from 11 – 21 April.

IKONO Roma is located just a minute from the Pantheon, inside an elegant old palazzo. But once you’re through the doors, it’s anything but conventional. The space is a series of immersive rooms and sensory experiences — some are high-tech and interactive, others are just playful (confetti blasters!) or visually striking. Think colored lights, mirrors, textures, classic arcade games, and photo-worthy moments through each new space.

On top of the always-available experiences, for the next 10 days there is an Easter Egg hunt –  not the candy kind, but a virtual version with QR codes hidden throughout the rooms. If you find them all, you will be entered to win a trip to another IKONO city (they have locations in Madrid, Barcelona, Vienna, Copenhagen, Berlin and Budapest). Searching for the eggs was a fun challenge — especially for our two kids, ages 5 and 7. They were totally absorbed in finding the QR codes, and it gave the whole experience an extra sense of purpose.

That said, IKONO isn’t just for families. We saw mainly couples and friends taking it in at their own pace. The appeal is that it’s open-ended: there’s no guided tour or deep historical explanation — just space to explore, play, and interact. We were in for about an hour, and it makes a great break between more traditional sightseeing spots. There’s a good balance between visual fun and hands-on interaction, and you don’t have to be glued to your phone to enjoy it.

IKONO has been on my list to visit for awhile, and the Easter event was an extra bonus – a creative twist on an OG holiday.

Tip: Book tickets in advance as holidays and weekends are especially busy in Rome in general.
