Long evenings are stretching into June, even though so far the month seems to be spotted with rain. With summer about to kick into full gear, we are welcoming the sun and all of the events that the long days and warm weather bring.
Rome’s river bars will be opening soon (but we are still awaiting the official announcement of the programme for Estate Romana 2016).
From outdoor movies to seafood festivals, here is what to see, do and eat in Rome in June.
All June: Through all of June and July, the Festival Trastevere Rione del Cinema will host a nightly movie in Piazza San Cosimato. The screenings start at 9:15 pm every night, and range from animated flick Toy Story to the 1949 Thriller The Third Man. For 60 summer nights, you can enjoy a different movie under the stars. Every weekend in June: The Monti Vintage Market offers one-of-kind goodies and great fashion options in a unique shopping experience from 10 am – 8 pm.
2 June: Festa della Repubblica – the 70th anniversary of Italy’s switch from a monarchy to a republic. Military parades and tricolore flyovers will mark the day. It is a public holiday, so expect some shop closures and reduced public transport schedules.
5 June: The first Sunday of the month means domenica al museo – free entrance to many of Rome’s museums. Some that are free include Palazzo Barberini, Palazzo Spada and Centrale Montemartini. I have a few more on my list for to see this month, and you can find the full range of free museums here.
5 June: The culmination of the Nemi strawberry festival happens today at 6 pm – where there will be a free distribution of the delicious summer fruit. Other events run through 12 June.
8 June: The American Academy of Rome is hosting an evening of Open Studios. From 6-9 pm, the public is invited to see the studios of current Rome Prize Fellows and attend a reading at 8 pm.
9 June: Villa Medici (the French Academy) is celebrating its 350th anniversary with a full programme of events. Every Thursday the Academy hosts i giovedì della villa. The event begins at 7 pm with the main performance at 8:30 pm. The terrace will stay open until and will feature a video installation. Entrance is free but space is limited. More information here.
9 June onwards: Through 4 September, L’Isola del Cinema will have film screenings on Tiber Island. Full programme of the films by date is available here.
9-26 June: The Just Music Festival returns to Rome for a second year, featuring artist like Public Enemy, Thievery Corporation and James Morrison. For a full line up, as well as to buy tickets, check here.
10-12 June: Nearby Fiumicino will be hosting the 46th edition of its sagra del pesce. The big draw? A 4m pan that can hold 800 liters of olive oil and will be used to fry up plenty of sea food delights.
11-12 June: For a different kind of weekend escape, hop in the car and head to Civita di Bagnoregio to see Romeo and Juliet acted out in one of Italy’s most romantic villages. Tickets are € 16,50 and more information is here.
16 June: At 8:30 pm Villa Medici continues its programme of i giovedì della villa, with a conversation with of Laura Bosetti Tonatto of Essenzialmente Laura.
24 June: La Festa di San Giovanni takes place this night, with a blend of Christian and pagan traditions. The feast day falls near midsummer- which is likely to blame for the mix of religious and pagan undertones. Evening mass will be held outside of San Giovanni in Laterno.
29 June: San Pietro e San Paolo are the Patron Saints of Rome and their feast day on the 29th is a public holiday.
Ongoing exhibits:
Banksy at Palazzo Cipolla: One of the largest shows of work by the artist Banksy is taking place in Rome through 4 September. The show pulls together works from private collections around the theme War, Capitalism and Liberty.
