This time of year, everything starts to seem over the top which is why it is critical to remember that sometimes things that are small are also things that are very important.
I prefer cones to cups, and smalls to bigs, when it comes to gelato. I go small because then I can order it right before dinner and not feel bad. Or I can get two gelati in a single day… and yes, I have absolutely done this.
But if you are going small, you better make it count, which is why I love Gelateria Fatamorgana. These flavors are as flavors should be: distinctive, layered and subtle all at the same time.
Take pensiero for example: pink grapefruit, candied lemon peel and ginger. You can taste each one in turn but then they blend together perfectly.
I don’t mean to wax poetic about gelato, but c’mon. Lapsang Souchoung Chocolate?! Creator Maria Agnese has got flavors down.
I have already written about Fatamorgana in Monti, but more often I find myself in Trastevere. And I more more often find myself here because it is most certainly the best gelato in Trastevere.
I still also love Fior di Luna for chocolate, gelato, hot and/or bar form. (But curses upon you, Blue Ice in Piazza Santa Maria di Trastevere, for all your trickery upon unsuspecting visitors).
Good news is, it is almost always gelato weather in Rome so stop by next time you are wandering around Trastevere to see if you agree Fatamorgana serves up the best gelato in Rome.
