Where to Celebrate Thanksgiving in Rome (2019)

Updated for 2019: Where to eat Thanksgiving Dinner in Rome on 28 November, as well as some special Thanksgiving-inspired events that are taking place in the Eternal City this year.

As an American, Thanksgiving is one of my favorite days of the year. There is nothing like a traditional meal of turkey and all the fixings to bring back memories of family events and create new ones – even when living abroad.

This year, we are going home to California for Thanksgiving! I honestly cannot remember the last time that I was in the US for Thanksgiving and I cannot wait to eat all the things. That being said, this is the exception and we are usually in Italy to make our own Thanksgiving in Rome, and shop for the international ingredients around the city.

Thanksgiving is not a holiday in Italy, it is simply a Thursday. However, if you would like to celebrate Thanksgiving dinner in Rome with a meal out, here is where to eat on November 28, 2019:

AWAR

The American Women’s Association of Rome is hosting a traditional turkey dinner at Eataly on the Thursday before Thanksgiving (21 November). The fundraising event will be a sit-down meal, with a welcome reception at 6:30 pm. Dinner is at 7:30 pm, and booking ahead is essential. This will include all the Thanksgiving food classics including stuffed turkey, cranberry sauce, candied yams and much much more.

Cost: €50/€53 for the menu, beverages included

Hotel Art at the Spanish Steps:

This four-star hotel near the Spanish Steps is hosting a Thanksgiving dinner with a buffet-style meal that starts at 7:30 pm. There will be turkey and cornbread or mashed potatoes, plus pumpkin pie. It sounds like it might not be the most elaborate spread in the city but it will have all the classics. To book: email [email protected] or call +39 06 328711

Hard Rock Cafe:

A reliable standby, the Hard Rock Rome is also hosting a traditional Thanksgiving. The meal will be served throughout the day, with two dinner seatings (at 7 pm and 9:30 pm). The meal will start with corn soup and end with pumpkin pie. But for the main event, there is roast turkey with cranberry sauce and gravy, as well as mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Entertainment will be provided by an American gospel choir – the  7 Hills Gospel Choir.
