Rome’s Mercato Centrale Turns One – Here’s How to Celebrate

Time really does fly – and case in point is that Rome’s Central Market (Mercato Centrale) is turning one year old.

The market is going to celebrate its first birthday in style and starting at 6 pm on Wednesday 8 November, everyone is invited to join the party.

Much like the opening one year ago, there will be samples available from each of the stalls of that market. Mercato Centrale’s great value is that it brings Rome’s best street food options under a single roof.

So to be able to try all of that for free? Well, that is what foodie dreams are made of.

In addition to free nibbles from the likes of Bonci, Trappizzino and Beppe e i suoi formaggi, everyone who comes to celebrate the first birthday of the market will also be served a glass of wine, thanks to Feudi di San Gregorio and Vespa.

But the night is not just about the food – it is also about celebrating the Esquilino neighborhood that is home to Mercato Centrale.

Throughout the day, expect live painting, demonstrations from street artists and performances by local musicians. That includes live work from Mauro Sgarbi, who will be creating preparatory canvas for his new murals, some of which can already be seen on the façade of Nuovo Mercato Esquilino.

Bonci has also teamed up with students from Il Faro – a foundation that provides work and training opportunities to underserved youth – to make a special birthday cake for the market.

The cake will be cut at 10 pm, but the party will keep going until 3 am (!!!). There will be music and photography opportunities between all the plates of food and wine.

See you there?
