It is hard to pick favorites when it comes to the best gelato in Rome, but Gelateria del Teatro has been at the top of my list for a very long time.
The gelato shop has a location on lovely Via dei Coronari, as well as a newer (and smaller) location along the Lungotevere.
Using only the freshest ingredients, del Teatro has nothing to hide and you can watch the gelato being made through a large window.
Inside is a large selection of gelato, as well as other tasty treats like chocolate covered citrus peels and chocolate truffles.
Flavors like lavender lemon and raspberry sage are impossible to resist.
I, however, am a fan of cocomero (watermelon) whenever the summer months permit.
If you go right when it opens (ahem, me) you can find the stairs behind the gelateria totally free.
Later in the day they are packed with visitors and friends, taking a gelato break.
While it is hard to pick gelato favorites what I will say is that Gelateria del Teatro has amazing flavors AND the best cones in Rome. Some gelaterie focus so much on the frozen part of the treat that they neglect the cones, and pile amazing gelato on cardboard tasting cones.
Go. Get a scoop or three.
On a cone, of course.
