I gave up on hamburgers in Rome a long time ago.
I was also a vegetarian until I moved here, so giving up hamburgers really wasn’t all that difficult.
But sometimes you really just want a beer and a burger.
Or three. (Beers, not burgers).
Enter Hopside: a great little pub with craft beer on tap and a pretty creative menu.
You can find everything from truffled eggs, to beer risotto (intriguing), and huge salads.
But did I already mention the burgers?
For just €5, you can order a 4 oz burger with homemade chips. I opted to add guacamole for €1 and that was the right choice.
The burgers are juicy, seasoned and perfectly cooked. Serving it on a buttered bun sealed the deal for me.
Jim’s steak fries were also amazing — probably because it is hard for me to get excited about plain chips, even if they are homemade with organic potatoes.
The changing beer selection was impressive, with gluten-free beer, saisons, pilsners, double IPAs, and coffee stouts for €5 a glass.
Just a few doors up from Rome’s Cat Cafe, Hopside has an easy but lively vibe. We ended up at the bar because the tables were all booked for dinner, so it is worth calling ahead to reserve a spot.
Ostiense is a pretty overlooked part of Rome, but I guess that just means more burgers and beer for me!

Guacamole on the burger? Sold. I need to check this place out.
And it was good! I am glad I risked it.
I can’t deal with crisps/potato chips on the side of a burger! It has to be chips/fries (if you get my meaning.. UK/American haha!) and I can never tell which one I’m ordering in Italy.. it’s patatine fritte vs. patate fritte right? Or have I just forgotten how to speak the language? Anyway… looks delicious! xxx
