I have been doing a bit of traveling this summer and so have been fortunate enough to spend some time in airports.
Here are a few helpful hints to determine if you might be in an Italian airport:
1. You can get a nice glass of prosecco for 5 euro.
2. You get a complementary “snack” of lovely prosciutto on fresh bread with said 5 euro glass.

3. No one checks your passport.
I was born and raised in California. In fact, I've never been out of my beloved state for more than two weeks at once. It was clearly time for a change.
I sold my surf board and my car, packed my books into my mother's attic, loaded as much as I could carry into two suitcases and bought a one-way ticket to Rome.
Armed with a camera and a lot of patience, this blog is about the process and shock of moving to Italy.
Haha! Love it, I was at the same spot a few months ago on my way to Budapest and had similar thoughts….was even surprised at the oyster spread they had goin on under the glass. Enjoyed a nice piece of cheese with my glass of white wine. hehe! Ah Italia, some days ya love it and some days you wonder what the heck you’re doin’ here. =P

you’re so right! NOBODY checks your passport and there’s no customs. i absolutely love it. however, while walking from testaccio to monteverde (around bar baffo) my friends and i did get pulled over by the caribineri, for some reason still unknown. but i’ve been living here since fall 2010 and that was the second time i had anybody look at my id (other than entering euro shot bar in campo dei fiori)
i haven’t really eaten at fumicino yet, besides from a cornetto, but the food at ciampino is too salty.
