Alembic Bar and Lounge in Trastevere

When it comes to bars and nights out, Trastevere can be hit or miss.

There are dive bars and college crowds, but where to go if you are looking for something in between?

Enter Alembic – the Trastevere bar that has a relaxed lounge feel.

Filled with art and perfectly mismatched tables, Alembic is the kind of spot you want to spend some time in.

Named after a device that was once used for distillation in alchemy, the relaxed bar was previously known as Akbar.

Located on the quiet Piazza in Piscinula, just up the street from the Open Door Bookshop, Alembic is in one of Trastevere’s quieter corners.

But there is nothing subdued about the quirky decor and serious cocktails.

I started with a Moscow Mule before moving on to the one of the bar’s signature cucumber cocktails. The drinks are perfect for the warm end of summer weather, but the bar also serves beer and wine for the more sensible crowd.

During the day, Alembic has coffee to fuel study sessions as well as a small menu (including a set lunch deal).

A mix of marble, glass, poured concrete and crystal all come together in the space.

I even spotted some hanging air plants behind the bar and had to ask where they found them in Rome!

In the evenings, a young crowd descends for the aperitivo buffet of cold pastas, bruschetta, meats and cheese to pair along with another round of drinks.
