Piazza di Pietra is one of the most beautiful squares in Rome.
Located between the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon, most people rush directly through it or miss it altogether.
But smack dab in the middle, opposite Hadrian’s Temple, is Salotto 42.
Salotto 42 is a small cocktail lounge with a fashion feel.
That is probably because the owner is a former model – so you can imagine that the vibe here is one that leans towards uber cool.
There are high fashion magazines lining the walls if you want to peruse the latest style spread while nibbling on aperitivo olives.
In addition to the fashion mags and editorial style photography, the design in Salotto 42 is always on point. There are comfy chairs and couches to share which make it feel more like an oh-so-cool living room than a bar.
Pop in any time for a quick coffee while on the move, or stay for a drink.
Sunset is the best time for people watching over a cocktail.
The €10-12 cocktails always come with a simple side of olives and chips, so sit at the low tables and sample one of the signature Spritzes.
Spritz. Multiple.
The trendy bar has a cocktail menu dedicated entirely to the spritz. Of course, you can find it made with Campari but the better choices are the versions of the classic Italian mixed drink that use homemade or more unexpected ingredients.
You will find a Happy Ginger made with vermouth, homemade ginger beer, lime and aromatic bitters. Or an Aperol Sage which adds an herby twist to the sometimes too sweet liquor.
In summer, I like a light spritz and tend to go for the Fior di Spritz. The prosecco and elderflower cordial cocktail is topped with berries or edible flowers. It can be a bit more sugar than the usual bitter spritz but it is perfect for enjoying the piazza on a warm day.
Try to grab the two seats outside, if you can.
But whatever you do – don’t forget to maintain La Bella Figura.

Thank you for the tip of this nice piazza. Next time I go to Rome, I will go to Salotto 42 and maintain la Bella figura 🙂 I liked Spritz Aperol but now I tend to have Spritz Campari
