It was only in 2017 that I stumbled (clawed) my way into registering for the Italian public health system. But for nearly 7 years, I always preferred to find an English speaking doctor in Rome.
Even as you potentially come to grips with a new language, there are certain moments when you do not want to risk a cultural or linguistic misunderstanding. For me, doing to the doctor was one such instance when I didn’t want to overthink and most importantly, I wanted to be sure that I understood absolutely everything.
All of this to say, it’s an issue of comfort and language – not of ability. Italian speaking doctors are very well trained and care deeply for their patients. But if you are in need of an English-speaking doctor in Rome, there are several resources available in the city, including:
Aventino Medical Group: the oldest and most established group of English speaking doctors in Rome. Practitioners cover everything from pediatrics and family medicine, to specialties such as dermatology and orthopedics. (Though specialists keep more limited office hours). Some of the doctors are expats and others are Italian, but all speak English. It’s impossible to categorize all the doctors simply because the group is so large but some tend to slightly old school medical approaches. However, this is probably the most diverse pool of English speaking doctors in Rome. The first consultation is usually slightly more expensive, and then regular visits are still pricey but lower once the doctor knows your history.
Doctors in Italy: From specialists to hospital assistance, Doctors in Italy offers a range of medical services in the center of Rome. Tech-savvy, the website contact and WhatsApp number make it easy to get in touch with English speaking doctors in Rome at any time of day or night. Doctors in Italy also pride themselves on making same day appointments whenever possible – which comes as a major relief when you are visiting for a short time or have an urgent need for medical support. They also English speaking doctors available for house calls, and can even send someone directly to your hotel. Most transparently, I appreciate that they list their prices so you know exactly what you are getting into.
Med in Action: While I haven’t personally tried Medinaction, I hear rave reviews from everyone who has. The service offers English speaking doctors in Rome for house calls 24 hours a day. Prices start at €100, and in some cases can be billed directly to your international insurance. The same day appointments can bring a general practitioner, pediatrician or cardiologist directly to your door. MedinAction can also hook you up with services for lab work or hospital referrals.
Keep in mind that emergency medical care is free for everyone at public hospitals. If you need urgent help, head to the nearest emergency room.

Luckily, I’ve never needed to see a doctor while traveling in Rome, so I can’t really give recommendation, but my insurance company recommends the International Medical Center (Via Firenze 47).
