June 2017 Events in Rome: Your Calendar of What to Do

Ah, June in Rome! While the nights still have a slight breeze to them, the days feel like summer has arrived. With the great (but borderline hot) weather comes a packed calendar of events.

I actually started the month along the Adriatic, exploring some of Croatia less visited islands with dear friends from the US. (And that is exactly why this post is being published on June 5th). There is something so soul refreshing about a summer trip. Especially one that includes boat rides and wine tastings.

However, if you are staying in the city, there is plenty to do in Rome this June.

All June: Through all of June and July, the Festival Trastevere Rione del Cinema returns to host a nightly movie in Piazza San Cosimato. It is a very cool nighttime transformation for the piazza that normally hosts a market by day. The screenings start at 9:15 pm every night, and range from animated flick Ratatouille to Full Metal Jacket directed by Stanley Kubrick. For 60 summer nights, you can enjoy a different movie under the stars. A full program, detailing the film schedule is available here.

Every weekend in June: The Monti Vintage Market offers one-of-kind goodies and great fashion options in a unique shopping experience from 10 am – 8 pm.

Through 14 June: It is your last chance to visit Rome’s small but enchanting rose garden this year.

2 June: Festa della Repubblica – the 70th anniversary of Italy’s switch from a monarchy to a republic.  Did you catch the military parades and tricolore flyovers that mark the day? It is a public holiday, so expect some shop closures and reduced public transport schedules.

6 June: A new taco place is opening in Trastevere. While I am 100% skeptical, 3 tacos + a corona for €7 might be worth the risk to see if it really is any good.

8 June: Gay Village opens for the summer!

9-11 June: Craft beer lovers in Rome should be pleased because there are at least two weekend festivals this month that are celebrating the brews. The first is the Fermentazioni, which has a €10 initial entry fee that includes your glass for future tastings.

14 June: Katja Meier will be in Rome to discuss her book Across the Big Blue Sea: Good Intentions and Hard Lessons in an Italian Refugee Home at 6 pm at the Anglo American Bookstore.

15-18 June: You know it is summer when it is time to enjoy craft beer and street food at the Birrò Forum festival , taking place in Zona Farnesina.

17-19 June: Not that into beer? That’s no problem because it is also Roma Cocktail Week. Some of Rome’s best bars will be celebrating by showing off their signature cocktails. Cheers to that!

17-19 June: For a more wholesome weekend, plan a quick road trip out of town to visit the lovely infiorata flower festival in Genzano. The streets are covered with blooms, and that coupled with plenty of snack stands makes this one of my favorite festivals near Rome.

23-25 June: Forget any bathing suit diets you might have all the good intentions of undertaking. It will be a lot more fun to indulge in Eataly’s Carbonara Festival. Trust me.

24 June: La Festa di San Giovanni takes place this night, with a blend of Christian and pagan traditions. The feast day falls near midsummer- which is likely to blame for the mix of religious and pagan undertones. Evening mass will be held outside of San Giovanni in Laterno.

29 June: San Pietro e San Paolo are the Patron Saints of Rome and their feast day on the 29th is a public holiday.

Ongoing Exhibits in Rome

Vivian Maier: An exhibit of Vivian Maier’s photography will be open at the Museo di Roma in Trastevere through 18 June. I will definitely be heading out to see this one because the story behind this relative unknown street photographer is fascinating.

Jean-Michel Basquiat: Chiostro del Bramante is hosting an exhibit of the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat through July 30th.

Giovanni Boldini:  An exhibition featuring the works of Giovanni Boldini is running through 16 July at the Vittoriano. The painter is best known for his beautiful portraits of high society Parisians. Jimmy went recently and loved it.

Botero: Also at the Vittoriano is a major retrospective of Colombian artist Fernando Botero. 50 works from 1958 through 2016 will be on display from 5 May to 27 August.

Boom, Beat, Bubble: The Japanese Cultural Institute has partnered with the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna on a new show that features Japanese prints from the 1960s, 70s and 80s. The exhibit opens on 4 May and runs through 18 October at the Istituto Giapponese di Cultura via Antonio Gramsci 74.

Thanks for this! Can’t want to get to Rome on the 20th! A bit bummed to miss the Vivian Maier exhibit but I’m sure it will be through San Francisco.
