Unexpected Rome: Ospedale Nuovo Regina Margherita in Trastevere

It seems strange to tell someone that they really need to go check out this hospital…

But you really have to go check out this hospital.

I know, I know. I hate hospitals too.

But Ospedale Nuovo Regina Margherita is not your typical hospital.

Trastevere hospital

Or, I mean it IS your typical hospital(?)

As you can see, the diabetes clinic is just up this way.

But most hospitals are not set in an old monastery.

Construction of the monastery ended in 1069, so this some legit old building stuff that you can see right in the middle of Trastevere.

Well, then a bunch of stuff happened with a lot of Popes and monks and it was eventually left in such disrepair that it had to be rebuilt from its foundations in 1475.

Verdict: still pret-ty old.

Then there was the sack of Rome, then some more invasions, but still the monastery stood.

It was not until 1891 that the monastery was converted into a hospice.

The beautiful porticoes betray the monastic history.

But the walls are also lined with ancient artifacts from even earlier.

In the central garden you can find a quiet place to sit among urns that date back to the 6th century.

Fragments and tombstones have been imbedded into the still-fairly-ancient walls.

All you have to do is pass through the gate off of Piazza San Cosimato like you own the place. The cloisters are in the dead center.

Sorry. Hospital joke?

Afterwards, you can shop at mercato San Cosimato or grab one of the best gelatos in Rome from Fatamorgana.

Right?? I would still be a bit nervous. Hate the doctor’s office… but at least I would have a place to calm down when I inevitably arrived 30 minutes early.
