Living in Rome means I don’t have a lot of reasons to sleep in Rome hotels but I do hang out at them because some are seriously gorgeous.
Rome has hotels in incredible locations right in the center of the city.
Location, location, location, means views, views, views.
Between Piazza di Spagna and Piazza del Popolo is The First Luxury Art Hotel Roma.
Filled with works from (primarily) Italian artists, the boutique hotel has 29 art-inspired rooms.
It also has an insane rooftop bar and restaurant open to guests and non-guests alike.
Take the elevator to the 6th floor and exit on to a two-level terrace that is one of the best rooftop bars in Rome.
The 360-degree view of Rome is dotted with church domes and is the perfect place to watch a Roman sunset.
The cocktails go beyond the classics, offering drinks like Italy 150 (citrus, limoncello, and prosecco) and spritztino (vermouth bianco with fresh mint and soda water).
Cocktails will set you back a bit at €18-20, but a glass of wine is €12.
At aperitivo time (about 7-9 pm), the drink comes with a plate of fancy little bites.
If you don’t believe that the golden hour in Rome is a thing, then come to see for yourself.
In those magical moments right before sunset, the terrace offers the perfect vantage point to take in Rome’s incomparable light.

Rooftop bar open daily all year, weather permitting. If you can swing the price, then book a room because this is one of Rome’s best boutique hotels.
Awesome share! Do you recommend booking a reservation for non-guests?
Hi Maya – for dinner, definitely. For drinks, not necessary but it doesn’t hurt because every now and then they rent it out for a private event.
Hi Natalie,
We’ll be in Rome the first week in October. Is aperitvio time still 7-9 pm in the rooftop bar? Is there a good chance the early evening will still be mild enough (i.e. light jacket)?
Hi Cathryn! In October, it should depend on the weather if they still open the rooftop. It can be a beautiful time of year but I imagine a light jacket is a good idea. You might want to ring them before you head out to confirm it will be open the day you want to go!
Thank you, Natalie!
This is my kind of rooftop – I need a good view of Villa Medici. ? That’s mainly why I think I’d pick it over Raphael. Close to The First there is the Hotel Locarno, and it has a terrace. However, I don’t know if the rooftop is under renovation or not. I should check.
