Niji: Cocktails in Trastevere, Rome

I have suddenly acquired a taste for cocktails.

I used to shun mixed drinks in favor of wine and beer because the descriptions on the ubiquitous cocktail list brought to mind brightly colored sugary, hangover-inducing abominations.

But Rome’s cocktail scene has grown up, and that is obvious at the cozy local haunts like Niji.

Niji Rome Social Club

Niji is a speakeasy without the attitude, located in the heart of Trastevere.  On your first visit to this “social club” you will have to get a ‘tessera’ – a membership card.

Once registered, you are free to peruse the menu and settle into the cosy corners.

Niji is filled with art, prints, and quirky details – it’s a bar that makes you want to hang out for awhile.

We came before the crowds and had our pick of seating but chose to sidle up to the bar for a chat with the bartender.

The staff at Niji are friendly and relaxed, happy to talk about Rome, and ready to make suggestions from the extensive cocktail list.

Feeling the summertime vibes, I went right for the suggested seasonal cocktail – a mango fizz.

Located a few doors down from Da Enzo and around the corner from Roma Sparita, Niji is the perfect stop for an after dinner drink.

Big shout out to Roy for suggesting we try it — thank you!
