Day Trip from Rome: Spello’s Skinny Streets

We left Spello in a hurry.

Rain clouds were hovering and the final stretch of road back to Rome was filling with Sunday traffic.

But it only took a short amount of time to be totally enchanted by the small Umbrian town.

Located a 2 hour drive north east of Rome, Spello is one of “i borghi più belli d’Italia.” (One of the most beautiful villages in Italy).

Spello Italy

We stopped in Spello by chance.  I had been aiming for Assisi, but when we got there, I was disappointed by the hoards of people and the less-than-appealing piles of neon gelato.

One coffee and we were back on the road, hoping to find something promising.

As we took the Spello exit, we congratulated ourselves.

Yes, this town was just the town we needed.

The town is ancient, with its founding dating back to Roman times. Most of the buildings and streets in the center are medieval.

It was the slopping streets I loved most of all.

I daydream of life in towns like Spello, where I would have a window box of herbs and all the time in the world.

More time is exactly what I need because I know we only had the tiniest taste of this adorable village.

I will be back for more. Especially since I cannot resist vintage piaggio ape and I can totally imagine this perfect day.

We were driving, but you can reach Spello by train for about €9 in 2 hours.  You will have to change trains once, but lots of options are available through Tren Italia.

I have to add it to my list! I would love to spend more time in Umbria. Are you going to make it south when you are in Italy?
