2013: Mid-year Round Up

In some ways, it’s hard to believe that the year is half over.  Then again, looking back at all of the lovely places I have been and people I have met- it’s been a full 6 months!

Here is what 2013 looked like for me from January to June.

Car rental and a three hour drive found us in Pitigliano, from there we also explored Saturnia and Sovana.

The boy and I exchanged trips for Christmas (a tradition I highly recommend). First was my gift to him: Vienna.  One of the loveliest cities I have ever been to!

Then we were off to Budapest, a thoughtful treat from him.  Fewer pictures because I was in the throes of a death flu but a gorgeous city all the same.

I jetted off to Switzerland to meet some family and friends. It was my first time and it was incredible, in no small part because our hosts were gourmet cooks! Lucky me… still dreaming of raclette..

I headed up the Vatican City (hey- technically another country) to buy some stamps during the sede vacante (literally the “empty seat” when there was no Pope because Benny unexpectedly retired).

My sister arrived soon after Papa Francesco, and we hit up several southern Italy destinations.

There was Naples.

Sorrento.

Pompeii.

Then Milazzo.

Stromboli (an active volcano in the Aeolian Islands that deserves a post of its own).

And Palermo (which was fascinating in some ways but off putting in others).

After all the European city hopping, we boarded a slightly larger plane for a slightly longer haul.  We went to Uganda for a week in May.  For me, this has been the highlight of the year to date, because of the friends we made and the sights we saw.  But most importantly, this was a wedding trip, and a beautiful wedding at that. They are rare couple, and it was such an honor to witness their special day(s). Thank you again for having us, E +L. Congratulations!

I came back to Rome faced with a few hectic weeks which included a move. (ugh- worth it now, but such a stressful process).

An unforgettable weekend in Tuscia, including Viterbo, Tarquinia and Calcata.

As well as a trip to Brighton.

A roadtrip to eat strawberries in Nemi.

A brief appearance in London.

And finally, a gorgeous escape to Pietrasanta last weekend.

Based on bookings so far, I know that the second half of 2013 will find us in Ireland, England, Procida and California. But something tells me there is more in store. (Including writing up some of these places in more depth!)
